WordPress to merge with WPMU

While The JAR Group doesn’t usually blog about goings on in the world of Open Source development, I am excited to announce (a month after it was announced by the developers) that WordPress will be merging with WPMU. The reason I’m even bothering to put this up is because while a lot of developers work with WordPress, a lot of web developers have pretty much ignored WPMU. So, assuming that a big portion of the web dev community hasn’t actually gotten wind of this announcement, I guess I can say, you heard it here first.

Basically, it means a whole host of features are going to be made available on basic installs of WordPress. And while I’m certain that the implications of this are still being hammered out by Matt Mullenwag and Donncha Caoimh, this development will basically make WordPress the simplest, most robust, simple to use, open source CMS on the market. And yes, I think I am finally comfortable calling it a full-fledged Content Management System.

While I would pick Drupal over WordPress for projects that require a hugely robust framework, and Expression Engine for those that need more customization than WordPress is prepared to handle, merging with WPMU means that a lot of the reasons a developer might choose to use a different CMS for simple projects are evaporating.

Toast to you WordPress. Thanks for making it easy to impress clients.
