Networking at Step Up’s Young Luminaries Event

Last night I attended an event sponsored by LexisNexis for the Step Up Women’s Network (SUWN), a national network of women that works to build career resources for women and girls. The focus around this event was to recognize a fantastic project that is part of SUWN called the Young Luminaries Program. Through this program, minority students from The Young Women’s Leadership School are chosen to go through a series of workshops, where they learn important skills such as resume-writing and interviewing in order to help prepare them for the professional world. After going through those workshops they are placed in a summer paid internship. I am actually a part of this program, which is how I had the opportunity to intern at The JAR Group.

Last night’s event was great because I was able to practice some of the networking skills I learned in the program. I also was able to show off and talk about my exciting internship at The JAR Group to the other guests. I can say that this company was definitely a fit for me because it is made up of a group of people who work hard but at the same time make their job as much fun as they can.

In this company I have been able to learn about blogging, social media, and online marketing in general. I was very happy to have the CEO of The JAR Group, AJ Lawrence, and my co-worker, Melissa Koehler attend the event. I must say this event went well not only because the room was full of interesting people and food but also because we were able to network with others even though there were differences. It was an amazing event where I learned a lot from the many people that I met, especially lawyers (the event was hosted by the law firm, Alston and Bird), and I was also able to inform others about this fantastic program.
