MSNBC on Social Media
Sometimes I like to brag about being one of Facebook’s earliest adopters. My school was one of the very first sites ever added to the site. But I’ll admit, despite being one of the site’s first users, I never thought that it would effectively revolutionize the way I use the internet. At the time it was just a blue page with your picture on the left and your information on the right. The site’s news feed didn’t exist, there was no wall, and I might be wrong, but I don’t think there was even an messaging feature. Those all came much later. Even then, I remember my fellow students confessing their addictions to the site.
Unlike when I first joined Facebook, social networking sites in general (Facebook, Myspace, Linkedin, YouTube, Twitter…) have become a normal part of almost everyone’s life. While social networking was a phenomenon endemic to college and high school students not just three years ago, it has since become a huge part of the lives of professionals, teachers, students, parents, and even grandparents in some cases. In fact, the fastest growing demographic on Facebook is among those ages 35 and up. And with nearly 250 million users (approximately half of which login at least once every day) on Facebook alone, it’s hard to deny the importance of this new way to network.
But if you are still a social networking denier—if you refuse to get an account on one of the many social networking sites for whatever reason—you should watch the report that MSNBC just did on social networking. They’ve interviewed the CEOs of Facebook, LinkedIn, and other social media platforms.
