Facebook to go real time
Earlier this week, Facebook acquired FriendFeed, a big player in the social media world. Revolution offered its inside scoop on why this $50 million deal was made. While FriendFeed only has a fraction of the amount of users (just reaching over million earlier this year) that Facebook has, integrating FriendFeed’s services into its platform definitely brings Facebook into direct competition with Twitter in the real-time world.
I am particularly looking forward to the upgraded platform when it comes out. As a frequent Facebook user and visitor to bookmarking sites, I like to share with my friends all the links I find interesting and amusing. At the same time, I’m curious to know what interesting links they come across over the course of the week. The way this sharing is currently done on Facebook is through a short process of posting links onto your homepage. But clicks are clicks, and we know how cumbersome too many clicks can get. With FriendFeed, it looks like Facebook can automatically update all of the users’ bookmarks, such as favorite Digg links and YouTube videos, into the newsfeed.
With this new real-time feature in place, Facebook could potentially have even greater user interaction and link sharing. Furthermore, this increases the importance to better manage your social media profiles.
