Helping Small Businesses Beat Wal-Mart, One Case at a Time

First, some background on one of our most successful new affiliate partners, DollarDays International, Inc. Marc Joseph approached us in 2007, after launching a new site for his online wholesale distribution company, which he started in 2002. He has an unusual business philosophy in this day and age – in addition to offering products by the case at “truckload” prices so that they can compete with Big Box stores, he actively supports small businesses by providing a support system for entrepreneurs, helping them to grow their businesses in numerous ways.

Helping the Davids of the world beat Goliath is a great business strategy. That, together with their high ratings for customer service, convinced most visitors who arrived at the site that DollarDays would help them to successfully grow their business. In other words, DollarDays had no problem getting customers to walk through the door once they found it, but it turns out that finding that door was somewhat of a problem…

Together with a comprehensive link-building effort to drive more traffic from other websites, we were able to turn their already quite respectable conversions into, well, megabucks for DollarDays.

Bear with us while we toot our own horn for one sec. From June 2007 to March 2008, traffic to the DollarDays website from organic search engine results increased by 104%. And revenue from sales resulting from search engines traffic now makes up over 33% of total online revenue. Toot toooooooooot!

So what next?

DollarDays was not content to just sit on their laurels, Oh no. They wanted to continue to capitalize on this new and improved visibility in the online space. So they again approached us, asking, How do we take this to the next level? Our suggestion? An affiliate marketing partnership. We would provide them with an appropriate affiliate network recommendation, guidance on managing the campaign, and a strategy for integrating it with their overall marketing efforts.

The results? For retailers on the Internet, it was practically Facebook-like viral. In just a few short months, the site saw a 66% increase in affiliate sales growth. Marc Joseph, CEO of DollarDays, said that he was completely blown away by the outcome. Even though he has been selling online for over 8 years, the increased traffic and overall buzz around the brand was practically off the charts.

So are affiliate networks really the Facebook for retailers on the Internet? The jury may still be out on that. One thing is for sure though, affiliate marketing as an alternative to traditional advertising should certainly make your short list for must-have items in a comprehensive marketing plan.
